FORMER President Edgar Lungu’s political advisor Kaizer Zulu has applied for a writ of Habeas Corpus after being in detention for over three weeks.
Judge Lombe Phiri said that after hearing the submission from Mr Zulu’s lawyers Tutwa Ngulube and Company, sufficient grounds had been advanced and the application accordingly granted in pursuance of order 54 of the rules of the Supreme Court and hearing has been set for December 27. Judge Lombe gave the state eight days within which to respond to the matter.
Zulu was recently granted K50, 000 bail and ordered to surrender his passport but still remained in custody.
Police slapped Zulu with the subject offence of Conversion not Amounting to Theft contrary to Section 291 Chapter 87 of the Penal Code.
This involves a motor vehicle Toyota Land cruiser VX registration number GRZ 759CL valued at K955,000, a government property which was assigned to him while serving at State House.
The vehicle was allegedly later concealed after he left office.
It was only recovered by Police on March 25, 2022 despite government giving an amnesty to all individuals holding on to government motor vehicles.
Zulu was also charged for four counts of Threatening Violence contrary to section 90 chapter 87 of the Penal Code which occurred on September 7, 2019 in Kafue District where he allegedly threatened to shoot and cause physical injuries on persons identified as Benard Nshindu, Sengewayo Jere, Saul Masikote and Manson Mweemba.
