INDEPENDENCE ward councillor George Daka is concerned over the continued sale of alcohol at Cha Cha Cha market in Lusaka and has warned of stern action against the perpetrators.

Mr Daka said the market has since formed a neighborhood watch because lawlessness was getting out of hand at the market and it was now closing at 18:30 hours for security reasons.

He said it was an acceptable that marketers have continued selling beer in markets despite the concerns from President Edgar Lungu, stating that he will not sit idle and watch people abrogating the law but ensure that law and order was observed.

Mr Daka said as councillor he would not allow such trends to continue because they were compromising security of the market and surrounding places and he would ensure that sanity prevailed.

“We have had challenges of security in the last one month after the contract for the security company engaged to take up security matters at the market was terminated.

‘‘But Lusaka City Council has since engaged a new security firm which will soon start operating. So for now some youth volunteers who are not PF cadres as alleged are doing a commendable job  in conjunction  with the Zambia Police,” said Mr Daka.

Mr Daka said some people were not comfortable with the decision which came out of the meeting by the market advisory committee meeting over the running of the market.

“It was not me who decided when the market should open and close but it was concluded in the meeting which we had with MAC and other stakeholders that the market should close at 18:30 hours,” he said.

He charged that some few individuals against the closing time of the market did not mean well to the traders because they wanted anarchy at the trading place.
