Street kids face boot

BY SANFROSSA MANYINDA
ALL street kids in Kitwe will soon be cleared off the streets as the right policy direction has been given by the Ministries of Community Development and Youth and Sport.
The Central Business District (CBD) is awash with street kids, who in some cases harass innocent passers-by in the evening.
Kitwe Mayor, Christopher Kang’ombe, said his office in collaboration with other stakeholders would ensure that all the street kids were cleared relocated.
Mr Kang’ombe said that the district was way ahead of the problem and that the matter would be resolved as soon as possible to prevent spread of COVID-19.
The Mayor was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation.
“We will not wait for the entire K56,000 to be found for the kids to be relocated. We will use whatever we have so far received from the business community to relocate the kids as quickly as possible,” he said.
Mr Kang’ombe said that he had a meeting with the representatives from the two ministries, stressing that it was resolved that a local solution needed to be provided as soon as possible.
He said that he had in the last three months been receiving requirements that the kids would need after relocation to their new homes.
Mr Kang’ombe said that he was taking an action plan that was in line with Government policy and that street kids would not be allowed to continue begging for money on the street amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We move the kids out of the streets now more than ever because it is not safe for the children to continue knocking on other people’s vehicles to ask for money,” he said.
Mr Kang’ombe appealed to the residents to be patient as the street kids would be removed soon.
