‘UPND has itself to blame over resignations’

By SANDRA MACHIMA
THE opposition UPND should not blame the resignation of its councillors in Western Province on the ruling Patriotic Front but instead itself for failure to put its house in order, political activist Charles Mwelwa has charged.
Mr Mwelwa said claims by UPND leadership that councillors and senior party officials resigning to join the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) in Western Province had been caused by the ruling party were baseless because the opposition party had spent most of its time pointing fingers when the PF was busy campaigning.
Mr Mwelwa said PF was finding it easy on the ground because they had working structures on grassroots in all the parts of the country.
He said UPND should change its ways of playing politics, failure which might be disappointed in the 2021 elections.
“I had been urging the UPND to put its house in order and not to take the advantage of challenges facing the country as a platform to gain sympathy.
“Politicians should not dwell on challenges facing the country, but instead must concentrate on building their party on what plans they had to address those challenges.
“Go in the field and meeting the grassroots and get the views of people, which l guess the PF were doing and they have won people’s hearts,” he said.
Mr Mwelwa said basing politics on hate would not grow the party because the people of Zambia were able to see for themselves and were able to make decisions.
Earlier this month the ruling PF scooped Nangula ward by election and just last week two more other UPND councillors in Limulunga district of Western province resigned from their party to join the ruling Patriotic Front.
Limulunga and his counterpart Sitoya ward councilors Sachalwa Sachalwa and Mwakoi Mooka, both resigned from UPND last week.
