Vandalised Zesco installation replacements cost K56,000

By NATION REPORTER
OVER K56,000 has been spent to replace vandalized installations on transformers and power service cables in Solwezi, Zesco public relations manager Henry Kapata has said.
Mr Kapata said Zesco officers who were manning the sub- stations were also being beaten by the vandals.
He said the power utility company was engaging stakeholders and scrap metal dealers who were perceived to be buyers of the stolen cables.
“The vandals are going to an extent of beating up officers who are manning the sub- stations so that they can have access to certain installations and steal,” he said.
Mr Kapata called for total support from members of the general public to curb the vice so that there could no inconveniences with intermittent power supply as a result of vandalism.
And Zesco regional manager Cephus Lungu said acts of vandalism were affecting the supply of electricity to customers.
Mr Lungu said Zesco was spending colossal sums of money on replacement of vandalized installations.
He called on the general public to come on board and fight against vandalism of Zesco’s property.
