THE Indian community have defied the Lusaka City Council (LCC) directive to demolish illegal gates erected on public roads in Lusaka’s Emmasdale area.

Lusaka’s Emmasdale residents of Indian origin blocked Kawimbe and Lukoma roads by erecting gates which are manned by security guards, a move which riled not only the area Member of Parliament Lloyd Kaziya but also members of the public.

And one of the Indians spoken who sought anonymity explained they agreed as a community to erect a gate to block unnecessary entry for security reasons due to recent high cases of thefts in their neighborhood.

And on Tuesday this week, the LCC gave the Indian community 24 hours to remove illegal gates erected in Lusaka’s Emmasdale area before the council moves in to demolish them.

LCC acting public relations manager George Sichilimba who visited the area told the Daily Nation that the gates were illegally erected as there was no permission from the local authority.

He said the community were not allowed to block or put up gates on public roads without the authority from the council

Mr Sichilimba, therefore, directed the Indian community to remove the illegal gates, failure to comply, the council would have no choice but to demolish all the illegal structure.

Instead, the Indian community have ignored the directive as the game were not removed by yesterday.

A spot check by the Daily Nation yesterday found the roads still blocked with the illegal erected gate and security guards going about their usual business
