Clamp down on illegal campaigns, ECZ told

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) must stop the illegal campaigns by some political leaders using acquainted media platforms, the Zambia DNA has said.

Zambian DNA spokesperson, Spuki Mulemwa, said ECZ must ensure that political party leaders do not abrogate the Electoral Act with impunity.

Mr Mulemwa observed that some political leaders had embarked on early campaigns even when the campaign period was not yet officially opened.

He said political leaders were advertising themselves using acquainted media while discrediting opponents.

Mr Mulemwa said in as much as freedom of expression was being enjoyed in Zambia, there was need for politicians not to abuse it.

“The democratic space in Zambia has expanded to the extent that citizens enjoy the freedom of expression, assembly and other freedoms during these few years President Edgar Lungu has been in office.

“Some section of society in an alliance with media outlets hostile to Government are abusing the freedom of expression and the media by their continued attacks on the Head of State and other Government officials’ character,” he said.
