Students cautioned against violence

By KETRA KALUNGA

STUDENTS in higher learning institutions should employ dialogue in resolving their differences with respective managements instead of resorting to riots and demonstrations, Government has advised.

High Education Minister, Brian Mushimba, said riots not only resulted in the destruction of property but also negatively affected academic work and performance of students.

He urged students to be ambassadors of peace, unity and stability, because without such virtues there would be no meaningful development.

“When students are faced with challenges they should seek dialogue with management and government as kopposed to rioting and demonstrations,” he said.

Dr Mushimba said this during the 7th graduation ceremony at Kwame Nkhrumah University in Kabwe at the weekend in a speech read on his behalf by Central province Minister, Sydney Mushanga.

The Minister further cautioned students not to be used as tools of violence by politicians but work closely with the Government.

Dr Mushimba said the journey to leadership begins at union leadership hence the need for students to be responsible.

“When schools are closed as a result of riotous behaviour it is you students who face setbacks such as expulsions, suspensions, poor performance and delayed graduations,” he said.
