SOME traditional leaders have raised fears that their chiefdoms and the country at large may experience hunger next year following the delayed farming input distributions by government.
The chiefs talked to have complained that some chiefdoms have not seen even a single farmer receive the farming inputs and are worried that any more delay might result in a poor harvest thereby having less food for consumption and export which will compromise the country’s food security.
Speaking to Millennium Radio in an interview, Chieftainess Muwezwa of Itezhi Tezhi says the farming inputs have not reached her chiefdom and that the delay may affect the food security of not just her chiefdom but the whole country.
The traditional leader says Government should put in strategic measures to ensure that despite the delay in distributing farming inputs the country should be food secure.
And Chief Sandwe of the Nsenga people in Lusangazi says the delay in the distribution is worrying and should not be allowed to happen again.
Chief Sandwe said he feared that farmers in his chiefdom will have little or no yield at all which will lead to severe hunger.
Meanwhile, Chief Mphuka of the Chikunda people in Luangwa says he is happy that his chiefdom has received the farming inputs.
Chief Mphuka says despite the delay he is hoping that farmers in the area can manage to have a good yield to prevent a food shortage next year.
