LUSAKA Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) board chairman Paul Moonga has attributed the spread of the cholera outbreak to indiscriminate sinking of boreholes that had contaminated the source.

Mr Moonga said some people were even sinking boreholes near graveyards.

And Mr Moonga has advised government to introduce a national policy regulating the indiscriminate sinking of boreholes.

Mr Moonga has observed that the outbreak of cholera was due to the indiscriminate sinking of boreholes especially in Lusaka following the reduced water as a result of works on the water plant.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Moonga also confirmed that 80 percent of the source of water in Lusaka was contaminated owing to the uncontrolled sinking of boreholes.

Mr Moonga, who is Patriotic Front (PF) member of the Central Committee (MCC), clarified that tap water provided by Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company was safe and clean because it was treated with chlorine.

“We do not control boreholes ourselves that should be a national policy,” he said.

Mr Moonga said people were sinking boreholes closer to septic tanks hence getting water mixed with contaminated substances.
