Help budding farmers with farm tools, says Lufwanyama DC

By ROGERS KALERO

MINING companies in Lufwanyama should consider empowering vulnerable people with agricultural inputs so that they could venture into farming and contribute towards food security and poverty alleviation as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

District Commissioner Justine Mwalikwa has said his office had received overwhelming response from residents who wanted to venture into farming, but were unable to buy agricultural inputs.

Mr Mwalikwa said his office was unable to help them all due to inadequate agricultural inputs hence his appeal to mining companies to consider allocating part of the CSR programmes to procuring farming inputs for the local vulnerable people.

“I am impressed that people in the district do not want to rely on government for handouts, but are ready to engage in farming to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation, but the challenge is that they cannot afford to buy agricultural inputs.

“This is why I am appealing to mining companies in Lufwanyama to consider allocating part of their CSR programmes to procuring farming inputs which can be given to vulnerable people willing to venture into farming,’’ Mr Mwalikwa said.

He said his office was on a daily basis flooded with residents wanting farming inputs to venture into agriculture, but as it was he could not help them all because the response was too overwhelming to handle.

Mr Mwalikwa said it had been observed that farming was greatly contributing to the economy of the country through job creation and food security.

He said his office would be handy to help farmers that want to take advantage of being self -reliant by finding ways of helping them realise their dreams.
