PARLIAMENT heard that President Edgar Lungu does not want any woman to die while giving birth.

Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya said the issue of maternal deaths was very close to the President Lungu’s heart.

Contributing to the motion of thanks to President Lungu’s address to the National Assembly delivered on September 15, 2017, Dr Chilufya said investment in a mother and children’s hospital was also a clear statement of intent that President Lungu does not want any woman to die while giving birth.

Dr Chilufya, who is Mansa Central Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament, said President Lungu had tasked the Ministry of Health to do its utmost to ensure it eliminated all preventable maternal deaths.

The minister said maternal deaths would be eliminated under the PF government.

He also informed the House that to minimise on treatment abroad, his ministry planned to build five specialist hospitals.

He said there would be two specialised hospitals in Lusaka, adding that one would focus on cardiac, renal and urinal surgery. Dr Chilufya said the other specialised hospital would focus on mother-to-child issues.
