HEALTH inspectors have shut down the operations of the dilapidated Mtendere police post, police spokesperson Esther Mwata Katongo has confirmed.

Ms Katongo revealed that the Police post was closed due to the bad state of infrastructure and poor sanitary conditions coupled with a lack of running water.

“The police post was in a poor state with cracked walls which are most likely to collapse and it has no water supply. This condition posed a hazard to the officers and the people that go to report cases there,” he said

She said that the health inspectors had recommended the police post be demolished to avert a calamity.

Ms Katongo however, assured residents that there would be police presence in the area and any unscrupulous people trying to take advantage of the situation will be dealt with.

“People should be assured that despite this sad development the police will not abandon them but will heighten patrols in the area and will station police officers in designated places to ensure the safety of residents and property,” Katongo said. She has asked community leaders to come up with a new building for police operations because of the high levels of crime in the area.

“There is need for police presence in the area because Mtendere has had instances of high crime rate. The local leadership should sit down quickly and come up with a lasting solution to this predicament,” she charged

She has advised the residentS to make use of the police post in the neighbouring communities.
