UPND DENIES PACT WITH MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRATIC CHANGE (MDC) LED BY FELIX MUTATI

THE UPND has distanced itself from social media reports suggesting that it has entered into a secret pact with the newly formed Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) led by Felix Mutati.

UPND spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, said in an interview there was no pact with the MDC and advised the public to ignore such misinformation. “As a party, we are not aware of the MDC alliance and no document has been drafted and circulated to that effect,” he said in a telephone interview.

But according reports circulating on social media, the two opposition parties were said to have entered into a political pact ahead of the August 12 general election.

The reports indicated that MDC President Felix Mutati had initially hoped to work with the Patriotic Front (PF) but failed to get an audience, forcing him to settle for UPND.

“Following frustration of failing to meet President Lungu, Mr Mutati begun talking to the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema,” said the unnamed source within the opposition.

The source further said Mr Mutati was willing to be Mr Hichilema’s running mate in the coming election considering that his party was still in its infancy.
