Deal with violent cadres, UPND prods Police

By ADRIAN MWANZA
THE UPND government does not subscribe to political violence therefore Police should stand their ground and bring culprits to book, says the party’s spokesperson, Mr Cornelius Mweetwa.
Mr Mweetwa said in an interview that as a party in government, the UPND needed to be open by not shielding anyone regardless of political affiliation.
He said that if the violence was shielded in the party it can spill out and grow into full-fledged violence.
He was reacting to reported UPND attacks on PF senior members at Chelstone Police Station and the clobbering of UPND Kamwala ward councillor, Mainda Simataa by fellow party members in Lusaka.
But Mr Mweetwa said the party would not shield anyone because everyone was equal before the law and those that commit crimes against the law should not expect political protection.
He said the rule of law was a foundation for development and therefore people needed to abide by it.
“There is no need to shield such violence if it’s done to our councillor or even Mayor, it can also be done to ordinary members of society and even our competitors, hence leading to more spates of political battles,” he said.
Mr Mweetwa said that the Police had the mandate to serve Zambians diligently without fear or favour.
He said the law was blind to political affiliation and those who were perpetrating violence needed to face the wrath of the law.
“The President has been categorical about this issue and people need to respect the rule of law by not taking matters in their own hands,” Mr Mweetwa said.
