North-West varsity: not just now!

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI
GOVERNMENT will not embark on the construction of a university in North-Western Province due to financial constraints, Higher Education Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame has said.
Ms Siame said in Solwezi that Government would first of all complete projects that were at over 80 percent completion.
She was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on her North-Western Province counterpart, Willies Mangimela.
“Plans are there to put up a university in the province, but for now, what we want is to first complete all those projects that are at over 80 percent. Apart from that, we want to mobilise sufficient resources,” she said.
Ms Siame however said the Copperbelt University (CBU) had opened a satellite centre which people should take advantage of for now.
Meanwhile, Government is establishing a centre of excellence in Kasempa district.
The facility is being established by the National Science and Technology Council and so far, a complex comprising two science and com-puter laboratories and a library had been constructed.
Ms Siame said that the centre of excellence being built at Kasempa Day Secondary was aimed at ensuring specific emphasis on science and technology.
She said science and technology was a stem for the economic development hence the establishment of the centre.
“So, through this facility, we want to ensure that even pupils from North-western province can also take part sciences and technology at tertiary level,” she said.
