COPPERBELT UNIVERSITY CLOSED

By ROGERS KALERO

THE Copperbelt University (CBU) has been closed after two lecturers allegedly died of Covid-19 last week.

The second biggest highest learning institution in the country has been closed to avoid recording more deaths following the spike in cases of the deadly pandemic

Both Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) President Lawrence Kasonde and CBU Registrar Helen Mukumba confirmed the closure.

Mr Kasonde confirmed in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that the institution had been closed and would re-open on August 1.

“Yes, I can confirm that CBU has been closed with immediate effect due to increasing surging cases of Covid-19.

“Apart from that, we lost two lecturers from Covid-19 and I think the closure of the institution is to avoid recording more deaths following the surging cases of the deadly pandemic,’’ Mr Kasonde said.

And in a notice obtained by the Daily Nation, Ms Makumba advised that all students should vacate the premises following the resolution of the Senate to close the university.

Ms Makumba said a meeting was convened on Monday and resolved that the institution goes on break and re-open on August 1, 2021.
