Jay Jay, 4 others deny aggravated assault

SUSPENDED Eastern Province PF youth chairman, Emmanuel Banda, popularly known as Jay Jay has appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault.
Meanwhile, there was a heavy presence of police officers at the court premises during the case to keep a horde of sympathisers at bay.
Banda, who walked in court using a clutch yesterday was charged with four others with aggravated assault on a police officer, Allan Mbewe.
They appeared before Lusaka High Court judge, Timothy Katanekwa.
It is alleged that on July, 6, this year, Banda, John Lungu, Maxwell Pito, Moses Silyonde, and Lyford Phiri, with intent to steal, did assault Mr Mbewe at Lusaka Central police station.
After the offence was explained to them by Mr Justice Katanekwa, the five said they understood the charge but pleaded not guilty.
The judge adjourned the matter for commencement of trial to October 12, this year and extended their police bond.
