Two lions on the loose

By ANDREW MUKOMA
TWO stray lions have been sported in Nsongwe Village in Mukuni Chiefdom of Kazungula and Livingstone Districts in Southern Province.

The residents are now living in fear for their lives and that of their animals because of the presence of the two male lions.
According to details obtained by the Daily Nation in Livingstone, the two lions crossed from Zimbabwe and now, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DNPW) has cautioned villagers to avoid unnecessary movements.
The lions crossed from the Zimbabwean side and are now straying in Nsongwe viillage and surrounding areas.
DNPW Senior Ranger, Edward Mukuka, said the two stray lions were spotted in the area on Friday by a resident of the area.
Mr Mukuka said in an interview that officers from DWNP had been dispatched to the area to assess the situation.
“We actually received the report after a resident of that area spotted the two lions and two DNPW officers have been dispatched to the area to assess the situation.
“We believe that these animals could have come from Zimbabwe, this is not actually the first time this is happening,” he said.
Mr Mukuka said officers from Chilanga DNPW office were on their way to the area to sedate the animals.
“Even as the officers are on the ground, I wish to advise residents in the area and surrounding areas to avoid moving at night until the situation is controlled,” he said.
