BETHLEHEM Congregation Reverend and marriage counsellor John Tchitumbo has expressed disappointment at the high rate of divorce cases due to alcohol abuse among couples in the country.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Reverend Tchitumbo said that from the biblical point of view, alcohol was not encouraged because it caused one to lose their sense of reasoning.

The Reverend expressed disappointment at the alarming number of divorce cases in the country. “Marriage counsellors especially in the church are doing their best to provide counselling to couples before marriage,” he said. He said what led to a high number of divorce cases in the country was that people did not practice what they were taught.

Rev. Tchitumbo said that most marriage counsellors from both the church and the traditional side did not live their lives according to what they taught the couples.  He has advised those involved in marriage counselling to lead by example to avoid rampant cases of divorce in the country. “Both the traditional and church marriage counsellors should live according to what they teach to help those aspiring to get married,” he said.

He further said that those planning to get divorced should seek help from the church and traditional marriage counsellors before getting divorced.

Rev. Tchitambo also said the cry for gender equity and equality has been another cause of divorce cases in the country.

He said that people getting into marriages should be aware of the fact that God hates divorces.

“Those people planning to get into marriage must be aware that God hates divorce and should not even contemplate it,” he said.

Rev. Tchitambo said that marriage was ordained by God and therefore, people must learn to respect what God says in the Bible.
