UPND impeachment talk is empty – Mundubile

Story Highlights
  • Mr Mundubile says UPND Mazabuka MP Gary Nkombo’s request to the Speaker of the National Assembly is an act in futility because such a motion was never placed on the Order paper.

GOVERNMENT Chief Whip Brian Mundubile says the attempts by the United Party for National Development UPND to move an impeachment motion against President Edgar Lungu is a desperate scheme aimed at soliciting cheap political mileage ahead of the 2021 general election.
Mr Mundubile says UPND Mazabuka MP Gary Nkombo’s request to the Speaker of the National Assembly is an act in futility because such a motion was never placed on the Order paper.
He explained that Mr Nkombo merely expressed an intention to move a motion of impeachment in 2018 but it was never placed on the Order paper for him to claim that he wants the motion to be restored on the Order paper. Mr Mundubile says Mr Nkombo has no legal nor constitutional basis to move a motion of impeachment against President Lungu.
He has since advised Mr Nkombo and the UPND leadership to focus on the 2021 election campaigns other than engaging in futile political schemes.
Mr Mundubile told ZNBC News that the UPND was making every effort to misinform the citizens on President Lungu’s eligibility for 2021 Presidential election because the party was aware of his popularity among the masses.
Mr Nkombo has reportedly written the Speaker requesting a restoration of an impeachment motion on the Order paper.
And Mr Mundubile has urged citizens to turn out in numbers to register as voters.
He said the re -election of President Lungu will guarantee continued development across the country.
Mr Mundubile has since urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- to expedite the voter registration exercise by opening more centers and beefing up staff.
