SOME traditional leaders have called on people to turn up in large numbers and register as voter in the on-going registration exercise.
According to them, it is time to end voter apathy, which was evident in the 2016 general elections.
Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba, said people should exercise their democratic rights by participating in the electoral process starting with registering.
He said apathy was a setback in the country’s pursuit to entrench democratic values in the political dispensation.
The paramount chief was speaking on behalf of other traditional leaders at Kasama College of Education during the launch of the Move-ment Voter Sensitisation (MVS) in Northern Province, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).
He said Zambians must turn up in large numbers and register as voters so that they could exercise their democratic right next year.
Paramount Chief Chitimukulu noted that a large turn out during polls would guarantee a representative outcome.
The event was attended by Senior Chief Chikanta of Kaloma, Senior Kanongesha of Mwinilunga and Chief Mazimawe of Chipata who represented Paramount Chief Mpenzeni.
Others were Senior Chief Nsama of the Tabwa people of Nsama district and senior Chief Mwamba of Kasama among others.
Earlier MVS Executive Director, Kapulo Musonda, called for non-political violence, before, during and after the general elections next year.
Mr Musonda urged people to change mind-set and refrain from violence atmosphere as it was the cause of voter apathy.
