UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) in Southern Province will not to allow police to treat its leader Hakainde Hichilema like a criminal.

Provincial Chairman, Billiard Makwembo, said that the police should not be summoning Mr Hichilema anytime they felt like as if he was a criminal.

Mr Makwembo told the Daily Nation that the police were harassing the UPND leader because he had gained popularity.

“As UPND in Southern Province, we are not going to let Mr Hakainde Hichilema to be treated like a common criminal, who can be summoned to police anyhow. This we feel is as a result of his popularity across the country.

“We urge therefore, the police to be extremely careful with the political instructions being given to them by politicians, summoning innocent citizens to their stations without a case as this has potential to put our country on fire,” Mr Makwembo said.

He said that the country was already politically charged and any unlawful arrest of politicians would make it more ungovernable.

“Nevertheless, we are all going to be in Lusaka to protect our HH and before you touch him you will have to arrest many of us,” he said.
