ECZ captures 7 million provisional voters

Story Highlights
  • ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Patrick Nshindano announced yesterday that the voters, registered under the exercise, which ended on December 20, against the projection of nine million.

ABOUT seven million Zambians have managed to register as voters, ahead of the 2021 general elections next August.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) said the provisional register had 7, 020, 749 eligible voters, captured in the voter registration exercise.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Patrick Nshindano announced yesterday that the voters, registered under the exercise, which ended on December 20, against the projection of nine million.

Mr Nshindano also said 14, 963 prison inmate voters were captured, out of the targeted 16, 000 eligible persons in lawful custody.

And ECZ secretary and legal counsel, Bob Musenga has dispelled assertions that there was no legal instrument to actualise the participation of inmates as voters. Mr Musenga has explained that the Constitutional Court, in the Godfrey Malembeka versus The Attorney General Case, expunged Section 9 of the Electoral Process Act, to pave way for inmates to participate in elections.
