A NEWLY launched initiative dubbed ‘‘Know your neighbour’’ project will intensify security as residents in Matero’s Kapwepwe 12 zones will have a security coordinator on a 24-hour basis, says Patriotic Front Kapwepwe Ward 25 councillor Patrick Salubusa.

Mr Salubusa said the initiative would consist of security coordinators and three security experts which would form a 15-member committee working with the police to ensure that Kapwepwe ward was crime-free.

He said each of the 12 zone coordinators would work with 10 people as zone security executive committee members but that for general membership there was no restriction in terms of numbers.

Mr Salubusa said this over the weekend when he met members of the community and Matero police officer-in-charge Raphael Moono on concerns of rising crime cases in the area.

Mr Moono said that he was ready to partner with the area councillor to ensure that patrols were frequently and effectively carried out.

He urged residents who complained of paying for various services to the police to always demand for a receipt, saying they had a right to do so.

“The initiative we have embarked on dubbed ‘Know your neighbour’ will ensure that crime is minimised in Kapwepwe ward as all residents in the 12 zones will be covered by giving them a mobile number for a zone security coordinator to operate on a 24-hour and seven days a week,’’ Mr Salubusa said.

Mr Salubusa said the building of a police post in Paradise area was a good move which required the full support of the community.

He has warned unlicensed bar owners and those in the habit of brewing illicit beer such as Kachasu that they would soon be rounded up and handed over to the police.

Mr Salubusa said the anti-crime and anti-garbage neighbourhood watch would start to enforce citizen’s arrests on people throwing garbage anyhow and would later take them to the Lusaka City Council fast track court.
