‘SOCIALIST PARTY RECRUITMENT EXERCISE A FAILED PROJECT’

Story Highlights
  • It has been alleged that Socialist Party president Fred M'membe has engaged civil servants and teachers to recruit young people as his members.

THE strategy taken by the Socialist Party (SP) to recruit youths in three provinces is a failed project, Patriotic Front (PF) National Chairperson Samuel Mukupa has said.

Mr Mukupa said the ruling party was still commanding popularity in Muchinga, Northern and Copperbelt provinces where the Socialist Party had engaged the elite to recruit members.

He has also challenged Government to investigate claims that the Socialist Party has put some civil servants on the payroll to undertake the recruitment process.

“There is nowhere in the world where revolution has been led and executed by the elite. Running a political party and particularly the recruitment drive is not like running a church where every member is dedicated. They would ask how much would be their wage as well,” Mr Mukupa said.

He  said the opposition political party had embarked on a failed socialism system.

Mr Mukupa however said it was prudent that Government took serious interest in the matter so that civil servants involved could be fired.

He said civil servants must always be loyal to the Government of the day, stating that those who were in active politics should be removed from the system.

“Civil servants have become the recruitment agents for Socialist Party. Tell them I said what a shame. It’s a failed Socialism then. Those who have been involved in this failed programme will lose their jobs.

“And the same Socialist Party needs to know that politics is voluntary work, they elite cannot manage to grow the party,” he said.

It has been alleged that Socialist Party president Fred M’membe has engaged civil servants and teachers to recruit young people as his members.

The opposition leader has formed a network with civil servants who are on party salary so that they can help in growing the party in the ruling party strongholds.
