PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu should intervene in the fight against Armyworms just like he did last year, says Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) president Wright Musoma

In 2016 Mr Lungu called in the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) to help contain an invasion of armyworms in maize fields.

Military planes flew pesticides to the worst-affected areas so that crops could be sprayed as a matter of urgency.

Mr. Musoma also said it did not make any sense that up to now, some farmers had not received inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) through the Electronic Voucher initiative, when the country was expected to be working towards curtailing the army worms.

He said despite experts predicting an invasion, the Ministry of Agriculture did not prepare for the impending disaster.

Experts have since predicted an invasion of armyworms in Zambia in the 2017/18 crop season.

This was after the maize-munching pests ravaged southern Africa earlier this year.

“Our only appeal to the President is that before any crop is damaged like the case was last season let him step in and help the poor farmers because the people entrusted with that responsibility are simply sleeping.”Kangili head teacher Mr. Hamusiya said there was need for community sensitisation about early marriages in the area. Mr. Hamusiya said the vice has led into poor pupil turn out in classes.
