ZAMBIA’S number one female boxer Catherine Phiri of Oriental Boxing promotions yesterday lost her WBC World female bantamweight title to Mexican Mariana Juarez in a tightly contested fight at the Arena Zócalo in Mexico City.

The defeat comes barely a week after another Oriental boxer Charles Manyuchi lost his WBC welterweight world silver title through a first round technical knockout to Qudratilo Amduqaxorov of Uzibekistan in Singapore.

Catherine made history on January 30, 2016 when she became the first African female boxer to win the World Boxing Council WBC Gold World female bantamweight title when she knocked out Yazmin Rivas of Mexico in the seventh round of the bout.

Catherine then went on to defend her title on August 27, 2016 when she battered South Africa’s Gabisile Tshabalala via a first round TKO.

The defeat is Catherine’s second out of her 14 career fights.

The last time she lost was on May 2, 2015 to Christina McMahon in an interim WBC world female bantamweight bout at Mulungushi international conference centre in Lusaka on split point’s decision.

Catherine’s record now stands at 14 fights, 12 wins with six knock outs victories and two draws.
