Delayed school repairs worry Chief Musaka

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

DELAYS in rehabilitating a 1×4 classroom block at Yowela Day Secondary School in Mushindamo has worried Chief Musaka of the Lamba people.

The classroom block had its roof ripped off during heavy rains in 2019 and since then, it has remained unattended to a situation which has affected learning at that school.

Chief Musaka said it is unfortunate that the only school in the area has been neglected resulting into pupils failing to learn due to shortage of classroom blocks.

He was speaking when government officials led by Mushindamo District Commissioner Andrew Kalangwa paid a courtesy call on him at his palace.

Chief Musaka appealed to the government to rehabilitate the school to restore order and improve learning at the school.

He said pupils are forced run away for safety when it begins to rain.

“Currently, I can say there is no school because with the rain season, classes are disturbed once it starts raining,” said Chief Musaka. Mushindamo district education board secretary Moses Lwanga disclosed that the government has set aside K200, 000 from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) 2021 allocation to rehabilitate the classroom block.

Mr Lwanga said the CDF committee also recommended that a new structure be built instead of rehabilitating an old structure.

Meanwhile, Mr Kalangwa told the traditional leader that not only Yowela Day Secondary has such a challenge but that  Kakema and Kichile primary schools were affected by rains and had their roofs blown off.

Mr Kalangwa said the government will prioritise their rehabilitation so that learning continues to take place in these schools.
