Wynter challenged to explain Chumbwe’s appointment

PF secretary-general Wynter Kabimba has been challenged to explain how he appointed Geoffrey Chumbwe as Lusaka Province chairperson when he was on police wanted list.

SuspendedLusakaProvincechairman Davis Chama who wants Kabimba to shed light on the allegations against Mr Chumbwe said it was wrong to appoint an individual with a background that would affect the name of the party.

Mr Chama wondered why Mr Kabimba had remained mute on the matter concerning Chumbwe who had been on the police wanted list for aggravated robbery.

Senior PF officials have meanwhile also challenged theZambiapolice to state whether Mr Chumbwe had been cleared of his charges which involved robbery at the former Meridian Bank in 1994.

They claimed that Mr Chumbwe had a criminal record which was before the police but no mention has been made to indicate whether he was cleared or not.

Mr Chumbwe has also been asked to be magnanimous and explain to party members why he went to live inSouth   Africawhen the police were looking for him.

They said “We wonder why Mr Chumbwe is busy disgracing other people when he is the one with a criminal record. We want to remind him that we have not forgotten what happened when he fled toSouth Africa,

It was worrying they said that party members with criminal records should be given positions because this was sending a wrong signal to members of the public.

And Mr Chama said Mr Kabimba as the chief executive of the party should help party members understand the matter rather than remaining mute after media reports suggested that he was involved in the robbery.

“How do we want to put a man in office that has been on a police wanted list. It was in church where President Sata said that the PF will rule by the Ten Commandments and since then he has been challenging corruption and made mention that he will wipe out all corrupt elements.

There was need for credibility among members so that the party could achieve its goal and Mr Kabimba should come out clear on members involved in criminal activities.

“We are not saying Mr Chumbwe is a criminal but we need to know whether the allegations and that notice we saw in the Daily Nation, were cleared by the Zambia Police,” Chama said.

He advised the party executive to embark on an exercise to scrutinise members before they were given positions in order to serve the party from embarrassments.

However, police sources told the Daily Nation that the matter has been brought to the attention of District Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO)Lusakadivision to look for the record of Chumbwe in an aggravated robbery case of 1994.

The sources said if Chumbwe was apprehended after the notice in the Press then there should be record somewhere but if he was not, then police should go ahead and take the necessary steps as he was still on the wanted list.
