Disability group request govt to shift association to new ministry

By Tawanda Munyuki

The Disability Rights Watch (DRW)  has appealed to government to consider moving  the national trust fund for persons with disabilities from the ministry of Community Development and Social Services to the ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises.

DRW national coordinator Bruce Chooma says this is because the fund is meant to provide loans to persons with disabilities but the monies are never paid back.

Mr Chooma says this is mainly because the ministry of Community Development is considered to be a social welfare entity whose monies are not supposed to be paid back.

He says this has been a challenge as only few people are benefiting as a result of people not paying back.

Meanwhile Mr Chooma has also called on government to facilitate for the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities to have offices in many districts.

Mr Chooma says currently the agency is only at provincial level which makes their operations challenging especially that they are already underfunded.
