‘I WAS ABDUCTED, SAYS ‘GRASSROOTS MEDIA’

By GIDEON NYENDWA

I WAS abducted by UPND cadres who threatened to kill me but thank God I managed to escape from them, Grassroot Media executive director Joseph Chishimba has said. Mr. Chishimba said UPND cadres had attacked him at a mall in Lusaka’s Kamwala South area and told him that they were going to kill him because his media organisations had been reporting nonsense about the UPND government. He said luckily he had managed to escape from them because he knew that his life was on the line.

Mr. Chishimba said when he escaped the cadres they went away with his. He said people advised him to report the matter to Kabwata police station where he went and reported and about his missing car. “The laws of this country do not allow anyone to drive anybody’s car without permission,” he said.

Mr. Chishimba said when he reported the matter to the police he was told to go to Kachingwe police post where the incident happened. He said when he went to Kachigwe police they referred him to Central Police where he claims police detained him on allegations that he had a case to answer. Mr. Chishimba was released on police bond but refused to disclose the charge he was slapped with. He insisted he could only disclose that on camera.

Mr. Chishimba said the reason the cadres were after him was because he had been reporting about how the UPND government lied to the people of Zambia about what they were going to do when in power. He alleged that the new government wants to suppress the truth and they were willing to go to any extent to make sure that anyone who talked about their failures was brought down. He however vowed that, “Nothing shall stop me from standing up for the people of Zambia.”
