Teachers’ union welcomes HH pronouncement to review fees

By ANDREW MUKOMA
UNITED Teachers Union of Zambia (UNITUZ) has welcomed the pronouncement by President Hakainde Hichilema on his Facebook page for the review of the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) practicing licence fees.
UNITUZ says this is long overdue and it has been the union’s call for review of TCZ fees.
In a statement released in Livingstone, Director Media Publicity and International Affairs, James Sikazwe has observed that the union is cognizant of the fact that the TCZ is a noble institution with a constitutional mandate of upholding professionalism among teachers.
“As UNITUZ, this has been our call from time to time where we have urged TCZ to review fees as they are exorbitant,” he said.
Mr Sikazwe said that the fees charged by TCZ are a serious enemy of progress to achieving quality education for all and demotivates both the employed and unemployed teachers and ultimately affect their work output.
“This pronouncement by the Republican President of Zambia is a Christmas and new year gift to both unemployed and serving teachers,” Mr Sikazwe said.
