GEORGE Compound in Lusaka has recorded 16 new cholera cases in the last 24 hours making it the new epicenter of the epidemic.

Giving an update on cholera statistics during a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya said the Ministry would soon issue a compressive statement to ascertain the cause of the new cholera cases in the compound.

Dr Chilufya said a team of health inspectors were already on the ground to determine the cause of the new outbreak noting that the compound had adequate water collection points.

He questioned why some people in the compound had continued drawing water from shallow wells. He said that the ministry would ensure that interventions were escalated. “My team is on the ground to determine to what has caused the outbreak in George compound because the area has enough water collection points but some residents have resorted to collect water from shallow wells,” said Dr Chilufya.

And Dr Chilufya however said there has been a 50 percent decrease in the number of new cholera cases recorded since Sunday and about 28 new cholera cases were recorded in the last 24 hours with Kanyama recording 8  cases , Chipata five, Bauleni zero, Chawama 03 , while Matero Cholera treatment centre recorded 06 cases with 69 cumulative in Lusaka district.

And Local Government Minister Vincent Mwale has announced that 2,500 trading spaces will be allocated to street vendors, the priority being marketers who had stands before the market was gutted.
