POLITICKING INFLUENCED CLERGY INABILITY TO ACCESS CHURCH EMPOWERMENT FUND

UNHEALTH politics from church mother bodies are responsible for churches failing to access the Church empowerment fund, the  Evangelical Youth Alliance (EYA) has said.

Evangelical Youth Alliance (EYA) president, Reverend Moses Lungu said the politics that emerged from the church mother bodies was very unhealthy and affected to a greater extent the church’s ability to access the funds because it brought confusion.

He was reacting to  government   disappointment  with the clergy for failing to  access the Covid-19 relief fund for the churches.

Rev. Lungu said in an interview that some church mother bodies started to make negative running comments over the idea of government empowering the church during this covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s a very unfortunate development that most churches have been unable to access the funds but all this has happened because the politics that emerged from the church mother bodies were very unhealthy because it only brought confusion, ‘’ he said.

He said the politics that surrounded the empowerment fund brought confusion, especially among individual churches.

Rev. Lungu said as a result the majority of individual churches have continued to struggle while the same church mother body leaders who condemned the government have continued to draw hefty salaries from their organizations.

The government has set aside a K50 million church empowerment fund aimed at stimulating the economy and sustaining the church and its activities.
