Chess Fide Master Mwango on course

WOMEN Fide Master (WFM) Lorita Mwango commands the Mukubulo Open Chess tournament after round three of eight played yesterday at Henry Courtyard lodge in Mansa.

Mwango beat Maria Banda to enhance her chances of qualifying to the final phase of the national team trials.

She is however tied on three points though with a better tie breaker against Women Candidate Master (WCM) Linda Hamoonga who managed to overcome Daisy Simenda.

Lubuuto Mulwale,Naomi Mwale, Banda and Simenda are tied on 2.5 points.

Meanwhile, International Master (IM) Richmond Phiri took leadership in elite section after he beat Musette Simutowe in round three and maintained a stronger tie breaker.

Douglas Munenga is second on three points after a win against Ashley Mutambo.

IM Gillian Bwalya dropped to third place after he drew against Daniel Mulenga and they are tied together on 2.5 points.

Defending national men’s champion International Master (IM) Andrew Kayonde suffered a setback in round three of the open section after he was held to a draw by Bright Muyenga to drop to 11th position on 2.5 points.

Fide Master Joesph Phiri is at par with nine other players on three points.

Phiri beat Malwa Nswana.

The tournament which has attracted about 200 players closes tomorrow.
