LUSAKA Mayor Wilson Kalumba has expressed worry at the escalating crime coupled with failure to collect garbage in some compounds in the city.

Mr. Kalumba however noted that with the establishment of the Know Your Neighbor Project, an initiative aimed at combating crime and keeping surroundings clean in communities, sanity would return in compounds where crime and uncollected garbage was rife.

Mr. Kalumba was speaking on Friday at Kakungu market in Lusaka’s Lilanda Township during the official launch of the Know Your Neighbour Project.

“I am happy to launch this project which is part of the national effort of the Keep Zambia Clean campaign.

“The Lusaka City Council will fully rally behind this project as it has shown potential to tackle crime and garbage at a community level which the city is grappling with,” he said.

And area councilor Mwamba Salubusa urged cooperating partners, LCC staff and residents of Kapwepwe Ward to guard the project jealously so that its results could be shared with other wards within the city.

He said if residents of Kapwepwe Ward see something wrong like indiscriminate garbage disposal and the ritual murders the ward experienced in Paradise compound area and decide not to report suspects then the ward would not be clean and safe.
