Government bans maize exports

THERE will be no export of maize until the country is food secure, says Ministry of Agriculture permanent secretary Julius Shawa.

And Mr Shawa has challenged the private sector, millers and the Food Reserve Agency to focus on meeting the domestic demand for maize and mealie meal.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Shawa said the law enforcement agencies were alert and closely monitoring various border points to ensure that the illegal export of maize and maize products was curbed.

“Government, through the national stocks committee, is meeting various stakeholders in order to ascertain maize stocks in the country.

“This will be a continuous exercise and all parties are called upon to fully cooperate by providing the required information,” Mr Shawa said.He said the 2016 crop marketing season was in full swing and various players were actively involved in the purchase and storage of maize and other crops.
