PEOPLE’s mindset towards disposal of litter in our installed public waste bins leaves much to be desired, Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations Officer, Brenda Katongola has observed.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ms. Katongola said some people were disposing big chunks of litter such as cardboard boxes among others.

She explained that the LCC waste bins were meant for small items such as plastic bottles, fruit peels and used scratch cards among such items adding that the bins were supposed to be used by passersby.

“We have been collecting garbage on regular basis but the challenges is that people have been throwing big chunks of litter such as cardboard boxes in the bins. “The bins are supposed to be used for passersby and not for shop owners and others permanently conducting business in the central business district,” she said

Ms. Katongola has reiterated the local authority’s appeal on shop owners to subscribe to LCC solid waste management so that they could be collecting the big chunks of garbage.

Recently the LCC disclosed to the Daily Nation that some shop owners in the CBD and Kamwala trading area had abandoned their waste bins and took advantage of those provided by the local authority.
