Man killed in hit and run accident

ONE man has died while another sustained serious injuries in a hit and run accident that happened in Kabwe around 19:30 hours on Thursday.

Central Province police commissioner Joel Njanse confirmed the development in an interview yesterday and identified the deceased as Charles Phiri, 55, of Chimanimani Township and Kamfwa Mwewa, 55, of New Ngungu Township.

Mr Njase said the accident happened when an unknown vehicle driven by an unknown driver hit the victims who were walking along Buntungwa Avenue.

“I can confirm that a man of Chimanimani identified as Charles Phiri aged 55 years died on the spot while another man known as Kamfwa Mwewa, 55 of New Ngungu sustained serious injuries in a hit and ran accident that happened in Kabwe around 19:30 hours along Buntungwa road,” said Mr Njase.

He said Mr Phiri died on the spot while Mr Mwewa sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kabwe general hospital where he is receiving medical attention.

Mr Njase said the body of the deceased is at Kabwe General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Meanwhile, one driver identified as Muhammad Abdi Ahmed of Serenje district is nursing serious injuries after being involved in a road traffic accident which happened in Mishikishi area around 19:50 hours on Great North road involving three vehicles.

Mr Njase said the accident happened when the third driver identified as Laston Ngumbo driving a Volvo truck hit the second driver Muhammad Abdi Ahmed driving a named truck.

He said the victim is currently admitted at Kapiri Mposhi Hospital and was undergoing treatment.
