“I cannot act as Party President because MMD President Nevers Mumba is still at the helm of the party and there is no leadership crisis in the party”, says Vice president Political Michael Kaingu

Dr Kaingu said there was no question of  him to act as president as announced by expelled National Secretary Richard Kachingwe.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Dr. Kaingu said that statements suggesting that he was acting president of the MMD were incorrect as the leadership of the party was still intact.

Dr. Kaingu said that the MMD would sort out its leadership issues using the party constitution and that the current confusion was temporally.

And former MMD chairperson for elections Mike Mulongoti said that the leadership wrangles happening in the MMD were extremely sad and undemocratic.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is one of the founder members of the MMD, said that he was worried over the future of the MMD and that if not resolved the former ruling party was finished.

He said that democracy was only able to exist where peace and tranquility existed, adding that what was happening in the MMD was shocking and surprising.

“I am worried about the future of MMD, it is really shocking that such things are happening. People involved in this matter are all senior members of the party who I believe and trust  are able to resolve this,” he said.

Mr. Mulongoti said that events in the MMD should worry all Zambians who believed in good governance and democratic principles.
