MMD president Dr Nevers Mumba today faces arrest following his summon to appear before the joint investigative wings on corruption and the MMD has expressed concern over the continued harassment of the opposition leader.

MMD chairman for health Dr Canisius Banda has said that government’s consistent harassment and systematic arrests of Dr Mumba are meant to distract the Zambian people from the many failed promises made by the PF prior to taking over government.

He said the victimisation and harassment of the leader of the largest opposition party was an assault on democracy.

“We have received information that the PF government has planned to arrest president Mumba again this week in a bid to weaken our party and opposition’s resolve to hold the PF accountable for the many ills that have befallen our country” he said.

He said Dr Mumba has been a consistent and clear voice demanding accountability from the PF on the many promises they made to the people of Zambia which include more money in people’s pockets, jobs galore in 90 days and the restoration of the Barotse agreement.

Other promises the PF made include delivery of the constitution within 90 days and the ending of the disruptive load shedding by Zesco.

“Dr Mumba is currently fighting for the liberties that are now being denied to opposition political parties and civil organistions in the name of the archaic public order act. The ongoing victimisation of Dr Mumba will not resolve the many challenges facing the Zambian people” he said.

He called on the Zambian people to condemn the PF for the brutality with which they are dealing with political opponents and added “we further appeal to international human rights organisations to voice out on the ongoing assault on democracy in Zambia”.
