TORRENTIAL rains have washed away Kawila Bridge in Lusangazi ward of Siavonga  in Southern Province, cutting off the area from the rest of the district.

Lusangazi ward councillor, Royen Mwiinga confirmed the incident to the Daily Nation in Siavonga saying motorists in the area were now forced to use the longer route through the bottom road to Siavonga town.

Mr. Mwiinga said the matter has since been reported to the district council and other relevant authorities and expressed hope that the bridge would be worked on immediately to avoid inconveniencing the travelling public.

He warned that if the bridge was not repaired on time it would affect farmers as they would not be able transport farming inputs from Siavonga.

He called on Government through the Rural Roads unit (RRU) to immediately dispatch their officers to the area to inspect other bridges so that those that required urgent attention were identified and remedial measures put in place to avert calamities.

“Most of the bridges and roads have been cut off and rendered impassable. The rains have also flooded rivers making it impossible for people and vehicles to cross so my appeal is that government should come to our aid quickly before the situation gets out of hand,” Mr. Mwiinga said.
