ZAMBIA’s sensational female boxer Catherine Phiri is set for a special honour and award from the World Boxing Council (WBC) during its convention set for Florida in December for being an outstanding boxer. Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) manager Chris Malunga said Catherine will receive the award during the 54th WBC convention which will run from 11-17 December in Florida.

“WBC will honour WBC Gold bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri with a special honour and award during the 54th convention in Florida. The convention will start on 11th of December 2016 and end 17th December 2016 at the Diplomat Beach Resort, Florida,” Malunga said.

He said the recognition of Catherine by the WBC was a result of the discipline, hard work and determination that the boxer has exhibited during her career as a boxer, adding that her achievements had put the country and Oriental Quarries stables on the map as most of its boxers have done exceptionally well this year.

He said Phiri’s rising career should be a morale-booster to other boxers in the country to work hard so that they could realise their dreams by putting in their very best to unlock their potential and attract international recognition just like Catherine had done.He said Catherine will go into the annals of history as one of the greatest achievers in the sport due to her attitude, adding that her recognition will go a long way in the development of the sport in the country.

“This is a great achievement which  OQBP is happy with because it will prompt other boxers to work hard because it is a motivation to them to maintain their discipline, remain focused and be determined to achieve what Catherine had done. ‘‘WBC has recognised her achievements because of her attainments. OQBP is pleased with this development because we believe our boxers have done so well in WBC sanctioned fights,” he said.

He paid tribute to the Government through the Boxing Board of Control (BBC) for its unwavering support which it had continued to render to the stable in staging bouts as well as other logistical support. He thanked the sponsors of OQBP which he said were instrumental in realising the dreams of many boxers in the country and pledged to maintain the momentum by ensuring that boxers under OQBP excelled.“Government has been instrumental in ensuring that we stage our fights and the BBC has always been there for us and these achievements come as a result of consolidated efforts which would not have been possible without its indulgence and we awe this achievement.“OQBP would also like to thank its sponsors who have continued helping the stable each time we asked for help. The overwhelming support we have continued to receive from our sponsors is what has made us who we are today and for that we are very grateful,” he said.
