KAMBWILI PLOTS AGAIN

By NATION REPORTER

EXPELLED National Democratic Congress (NDC) president, Chishimba Kambwili is now pondering subjecting the party to a convention in an effort to legalise his presidency.

Mr Kambwili is desperately seeking to save his presidency after being at loggerheads with some senior NDC officials over his “illegal” stay at the top.

His recent efforts to sneak in documents that legalise his presidency at the Registrar of Societies hit a snag.

The infighting follows Mr Kambwili’s decision to withdraw NDC from the Opposition Alliance after it chose UPND president, Hakainde Hichilema as its candidate in the August 12 elections and changed the name to UPND Alliance.

Some senior NDC officials who include, vice president Joseph Akafumba, secretary-general Bridget Atanga and presidential spokesperson Edward Mumbi expelled Mr Kambwili and have since commenced legal proceedings to chuck him out of the party.

Mr. Kambwili told the Daily Nation yesterday that the party would be going for a convention in two weeks’ time but could however not disclose the date.

He explained that more details of the convention would be disclosed once the central committee concludes with all the arrangements.

“We will be going to the convention in the next two weeks, we are still discussing as the central committee on the exact date,” he said.

Mr. Kambwili however assured that the nation would be availed with more information on the coming NDC convection once discussions under the umbrella of the central committee are concluded.

He stated that a committee to spearhead the budget was appointed and was expected to present a report to the committee next week after which the committee would meet and plan the coming convention.

The Joseph Akafumba-led faction has among other things alleged that Mr Kambwili was trying to sideline them by attempting to sneak in a new constitution at the Registrar of Societies, allegations which Mr. Kambwili denied.

Mr. Akafumba and the group also challenged Mr. Kambwili to produce a constitution that appointed him as NDC leader because the party had no constitution.

But Dr. Kambwili rubbished the allegations saying if the NDC had no constitution, it would not have existed for four years because according to the national constitution a political party without a constitution does not exist.
