Opposition alliance spokesperson released

OPPOSITION Republican Progressive Party (RPP) leader Leslie Chikuse was yesterday released from detention after an order by the Lusaka High Court in matter in which he allegedly sold a plot to two people.

Mr Chikuse who is also the UPND alliance spokesperson was arrested on March 3, this year and was detained at Chilanga Police station. On Tuesday he applied for habeas corpus where he accused the police of refusing to give him a bond despite facing a civil offense.

The Opposition leader claimed his arrest is in relation to the matter before the Lusaka High Court in which he has been sued over stand SUB 15044/917 Kamwala South he allegedly sold to two people.

According to an affidavit in support of ex parte summons for leave to issue writ of habeas corpus filed on Tuesday, Mr Chikuse stated that since his arrest and detention, he had not been presented to a court of competent jurisdiction despite repeated requests.

He cited the Attorney General, Likando Kalaluka as the respondent in the matter. When the matter came up for hearing before Judge Wilfred Muma yesterday, he ordered for his release.
