Ex-railway workers appeal to Lungu for dues

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu should intervene and ensure former employees of Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) are paid their terminal benefits, the Railways Workers Union of Zambia (RWUZ) has pleaded.

RWUZ president, Nathan Zulu, said 665 out of the 881 former workers whose contracts were terminated in 2012 had not yet been paid.

RSZ was a concessionaire on the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL), but the concession agreement was terminated in 2012.

Mr Zulu told the Daily Nation that their families had been suffering because Government had failed to honour the undertaking despite making promises several times.

He said the RWUZ been engaging all relevant ministries such as Finance, Transport and Communications, Justice and Labour to resolve the matter in vain. “We are now passionately appealing to the office of President Edgar Lungu to intervene in this matter and expedite the payment of former Railways employees of who some have since passed on leaving this union to contend with widows and orphans,” Mr Zulu said
