Reject overstayed leaders, says YALI

By FRANCIS CHIPALOZ

ZAMBIANS should reject leaders that have overstayed in their positions, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has said.

And YALI has disclosed that young people aspirng for leadership  positions are being threatened of being bewitched by elder leaders.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, YALI President Andrew Ntewewe said his organisation was happy that Kabwata MP Given  Lubinda had decided not to recontest the seat.

Mr Ntewewe said there must be entry and exit mechanism in leadership so that there was a smooth transition.

“From a YALI’s point of view, we commend Hon Lubinda for his decision not to recontest the Kabwata seat in this year’s election. Emulate Hon Lubinda and hand over the leadership mantle to fresh blood,” Mr Ntewewe said.

Mr Ntewewe said young people had the potential of contributing to the development of the country given a chance.

He said it was important for leaders who have served for a long time to step aside so that emerging leaders can take over from them.

“They are a number of ways of how the veteran politicians can contribute to the development of the country because of their experience. They have been there for a long time and they can still contribute even when they leave office,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Ntewewe disclosed that YALI had continued receiving reports and complaints from young people with leadership aspirations that they were being threatened with witchcraft by elders, a situation he said was unfortunate.
