A 24-year-old miner at Jifumpa mine in Kasempa has died while his colleague is nursing injuries in Mukinge Mission hospital after a rock fall on them.
According to North-western province Commissioner of Police, Joe Njase, the incident happened on Wednesday around 22 hours. The deceased was identified as Davies Ngungu and survivor as Luckson Kolito aged 25.
Mr Njase explained that two miners where working underground when a rock fell on them. “There was an accident at Jifumpa mine which was reported by Morgan Kazembe who is the mining manager at Jifumpa mine. “He reported that Davies Ngungu a miner has died and Luckson Kolito was injured while they were working underground at Jifumpa mine,” he explained.
He said the body has been retrieved from the rubble and deposited in Mukinge Mission Hospital mortuary while Luckson Kolito was still admitted at the same hospital. “An inquiry file has been opened and police will work with mine safety department to determine how safe the mine is,” he added.
