Agricultural engineering in development

Dear Editor, ALLOW me to comment on this subject. Until now most people have always associated agricultural engineering with tractors.

And yes, some even think agricultural engineers are better called agricultural mechanics. However, this profession means much more than such demeaning perception. An agricultural engineer has input at almost every point in the agricultural value chain

. Scaling up food production cannot succeed without an agricultural engineer. Unfortunately this is one expert whose role in agricultural development is poorly understood by the farmer in Zambia. Recognise this expert and he will teach you how to economically set up structures at your farm.

He will teach you techniques to make optimum use of your farm water, he will teach you how to harvest your crop with minimum losses and better still how to add value to your crop so you could get higher value for your money. The agricultural engineer is just bigger than people wrongly perceive him. Look for agricultural engineers and you will appreciate you did. If you do not know where and how to find them ask me. ARNOLD SIKAONA, Kasama.
